The recently established Bright Biomethane North America, a subsidiary of Dutch company Bright Biomethane, has said that it will soon realise its first biogas upgrade projects in the state of New York, US.

The renewable natural gas (RNG) projects are reportedly the first on the US East Coast to be equipped with high efficient three-stage membrane separation technology, and some of the first in the entire US.

The RNG systems will be delivered as part of an upgrade project for Martin Energy Group, which includes an overhaul on five existing digesters and the replacement of the combined heat and power (CHP) system with Bright’s technology.

The projects will refine biogas from manure to produce RNG as a natural gas substitute.

According to Bright Biomethane, direct grid injection is not possible at all the sites, so the company will instead deploy its virtual pipeline solutions.

In this solution, the gas is compressed to a high pressure, after which it can then be safely transported to the grid entry point and injected into the pipeline.

“We are responsible from engineering up to commissioning and all that surrounds the biogas upgrading and virtual pipeline solution,” explained chief technology officer Marcel te Braak. “We will combine our vast experience from Europe with manufacturing in the US to get the best solution for each project.”

Bright Biomethane’s 3-step membrane technology ensures high biomethane quality and CHrecovery of at least 99.5%, with a methane loss of <0.5%.
